Graviola (Annona muricata), also known as guanabana or soursop, is a small tree indigenous to most of the warmest tropical areas in South America, including the Amazon Basin. Graviola has a long history of use by indigenous people of the Amazon Basin who use all parts of the Graviola tree, the bark, leaves, root, fruit and seeds, to treat various ailments. Graviola tree leaves have been used traditionally for their various therapeutic properties. The fruit and seeds are used to eliminate intestinal parasites and for stomach and bowel discomforts. Women eat the fruit and drink its juice to increase lactation. Teas are made from the root, bark and leaves as a sedative, antispasmodic and nerve tonic, as well as to help maintain healthy glucose levels. Graviola tea is consumed to elevate mood and increase the quality of life. Graviola tea applied to the skin is also used as an insect repellent. Crushed Graviola leaves blended with the fruit is used topically for the relief of muscle and joint pain. Research since the 1940s has validated and expanded understanding of this herb and its unique phyto-nutritional qualities. It is currently under intense study for its potential to possibly assist in blocking free radicals and abnormal cell growth such as cancer.
